Steering Shaft

The steering shaft is the core force transmission part of the steering system, which is directly related to the precision and safety of driving. It is not only the "nerve pathway" between the steering wheel and the steering gear, but also plays a key role in collision safety.

Core Advantage
Precision force transmission: The steering shaft delivers the torque applied by the driver to the steering gear without delay or loss, ensuring responsive steering and precise direction control.
Safety protection: Most modern steering axles are equipped with energy-absorbing capabilities. During collisions, they can absorb impact energy through structural deformation or shaft disengagement, thereby reducing the risk of injury to the driver.
Adjustable design: Integrated height and angle adjustment mechanisms (e.g., telescopic or tilting types) to accommodate drivers of varying body types, enhancing driving comfort and operational convenience.
Compact structure: Utilizes split-type or universal joint connections to accommodate complex interior layouts, effectively circumventing cockpit space limitations.

Key Application Scenarios
Passenger vehicles: Widely used in sedans, SUVs, and similar models, featuring gear-rack or cycloidal ball steering mechanisms connected to the steering wheel.
Commercial vehicles and trucks: In older or large vehicles lacking power-assist systems, the steering shaft bears greater steering loads, requiring higher strength specifications.
High-performance tuning package: Upgraded to a more rigid and responsive racing-grade steering axle for enhanced handling feedback.
New energy vehicle models: Compatible with Steer-by-Wire systems, some models utilize electronic signals to replace mechanical connections, though traditional steering axles remain predominant in mainstream vehicle designs.

Critical Material Selection
The steering shaft is typically constructed from high-strength metal materials to ensure rigidity and fatigue resistance.
No.45 steel: characterized by low cost and excellent machinability, commonly used for steering shaft blanks in standard vehicle models.
Alloy steels (e.g., 40Cr, 20MnVB): Subjected to quenching and tempering or carburizing treatments to enhance surface hardness and wear resistance, suitable for high-load applications.

Core Production Process
Forging and heat treatment: Die forging is employed for shaping, followed by normalizing or quenching and tempering to improve the internal microstructure of the material and enhance mechanical properties.
Machining: The CNC lathe performs precision machining, including the outer circle, end face, and spline.
The grinding process ensures surface roughness below Ra1.6μm to guarantee assembly accuracy.
Split structure manufacturing: The up/down steering shafts are connected via flexible universal joints or safety couplings to enable angle adjustment and collision disengagement functionality.
Mass Detection: Static torque strength test: Ensure the ability to withstand torque several times greater than normal driving conditions.
Torsional fatigue life test: Simulates durability under long-term use.
Assembly clearance and torque testing: Ensure smooth operation without sticking.
